Is
anesthesia safe for my pet?.
At South Mill Pet Care, we take many precautions with
pets who will receive a general anesthetic. We offer
presurgical testing including a blood chemistry panel,
a complete blood count, electrocardiogram (ECG) and
radiographs of your pet's heart and lungs. We highly
recommend our presurgical screen in younger pets and
require it in pets over 7 years of age. A blood chemistry
panel tells us how well the body organs such as kidneys
and liver will respond to and process the anesthetic.
A complete blood count can tell us if your pet is anemic
or has an infection. An electrocardiogram is viewed
by Veterinary Cardiologists who recommend an anesthetic
protocol. Radiographs provide us with additional information
on the condition of the heart and lungs.

Why
should I spay or neuter my pet?
In female pets, spaying is the removal of the uterus
and ovaries. In male pets, neutering is the removal
of the testicles. Removal of these organs makes reproducing
impossible, and has many health and behavioral benefits
as well. Spayed pets have no risk of uterine cancer
or a uterine infection called pyometra. Mammary tumors
are also rare in pets spayed at an early age. Neutered
pets have no risk of testicular cancer and prostate
risks are usually reduced.

Are
vaccines safe for my pet?
Vaccinations give your pet protection against many of
the diseases your pet may come in contact with. In rare
occurances, pets may experience vaccine reactions. Most
vaccine reactions are uncomplicated and symptoms dissipate
over a 12 hour period. Rarely, reactions are more severe
and require immediate medical attention for your pet.
At South Mill Pet Care, we attempt to reduce the number
of these reactions by taking various precautions. Additional
precautions are taken if your pet has had a previous
vaccine reaction.
